Registration open for learn-to-swim lessons

Registration is open for learn-to-swim lessons that will begin Monday, April 5, at the city’s Cypress Aquatic Center located 981 George W. Engram Blvd.

The lessons are for youth ages 4 to 10, as well as adults. There are multiple swimming skill levels to choose from according to a swimmer's capability. Classes are based on age and skill level. Class lasts 30 minutes with two classes per week, totaling eight classes per session. Classes are available on either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. 

  • Session 1 lessons are from April 5 through April 29.
  • Session 2 lessons are from May 3 through May 27.

The sessions are $30 per person. Financial scholarships are available for qualifying youth. For more information and to register, call (386) 671-8392 or visit www.codb.us/SwimLessons.

Fire department exhibit at Halifax Historical Museum

Fire Department's history

The history of the Daytona Beach Fire Department is featured in an exhibit at the Halifax Historical Museum. Now through the summer, guests can view the exhibit with memorabilia and equipment highlighting the department’s history dating back to the late 1800s through modern day.


Notable items on display include:

  • Photos from 1898, the oldest items on display
  • The fire department’s call log book from 1926
  • Authentic, vintage firefighter uniforms

Typically, many of these items are on display at Fire Station #1 (301 S. Beach St.), the second oldest active fire station in Florida, and Fire Station #7 (2545 LPGA Blvd.).

The museum is located at 252 S. Beach St. and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

COVID-19 Memorial Day International Speedway Boulevard

Monday is COVID-19 Memorial Day

Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry issued a proclamation that designates the first Monday in March as COVID-19 Memorial Day in remembrance of those who have lost their lives and in honor of those who continue to suffer from the impact of the virus.

Residents are encouraged to continue to take steps to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and be supportive of those impacted by the pandemic.

City Commission to meet Wednesday

The next meeting for the City Commission will be at
6 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, at City Hall. The agenda for the meeting is available for review on the city’s website, www.codb.us.

Residents can sign up to receive city meeting agendas via email or text message by clicking on “Notify Me” on the city’s website.

Special procedures to allow remote and in-person public participation at city meetings continue to be in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The procedures can be viewed online.

The meeting will be live streamed on DBTV, which can be accessed from www.codb.us/DBTV, and Spectrum Channel 490.
