A new pool entry pavilion and additional shaded seating areas are coming soon to the Campbell Aquatic Center in the city’s Midtown area. Construction has begun on a 300-square-foot building that will be located on the north side of the existing facility. When completed in January, it will be a new entry for the popular pool. The concrete building will include a reception desk, cabinets and a storage area.
In addition, crews will install new stairs and an ADA compliant ramp to enter the pool area, sidewalk on the north side of the enclosure, and two 20’ x 20’ canopy shade structures over four new picnic tables that will be on the east side beyond the existing pool deck. During construction, the pool, restrooms and locker rooms are closed.
The latest improvements are part of three phases planned at the facility. Phase two will expand the east pool deck and add shade structures, tables and chairs, and will happen simultaneously with the first phase and be complete in January. Phase three will remodel and expand the restrooms and remodel office space into storage rooms.
Other improvements made in past years at the aquatic center include resurfacing the swimming pools and installing a geothermal heater to allow for year-round use.
The first two phases are estimated to cost $154,874, and the city has been awarded a grant of $139,386 from the Daytona Beach Racing and Recreational Facilities District (the “District”). The city is pursuing additional funding opportunities for the final phase of the project.
The improvements are also part of a broader initiative to make upgrades and increase the connectivity between the Dickerson Community Center and the pool facility.
Earlier this year, the city submitted a grant request to the District to replace the Dickerson’s aged playground equipment with new, modern apparatus. The design includes relocating the playground from the adjacent parking lot so people don’t have to walk through traffic to get to the play area.
The District agreed to fund the majority of the project’s costs for a total of $253,680 over a three-year period. Other planned upgrades include additional parking, connecting sidewalks, improved exterior lighting and new basketball courts, while the tennis and racquetball courts will be removed.
