The Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) is actively investigating a fatal accident last night (September 14, 2020) involving an elderly female pedestrian.
A 911 call sent officers to the area of U.S. 1/South Ridgewood Avenue & Magnolia Avenue around 5:30 p.m., where they found the 73-year-old Daytona Beach resident lying on the pavement with a serious head injury.
Paramedics took the woman to Halifax Health Medical Center (HHMC) as a trauma alert. She passed away from her injuries shortly after arrival at HHMC.
Witnesses told the Traffic Homicide Unit that the woman attempted to cross on foot from the east side of Ridgewood to the west when she was knocked to the ground by the front of a silver 2016 Dodge Ram attempting to make a right turn into the northbound lanes of Ridgewood from the eastbound lane of Magnolia.
Investigators believe the victim tried to cross Ridgewood from the curb in front of the Jimmy John’s restaurant about 25 feet away from the crosswalk. She appeared to be walking diagonally towards the crosswalk when she was struck.
The driver of the Dodge Ram – a 39-year-old Ormond Beach man – stayed on scene and cooperated with investigators.
Northbound traffic on Ridgewood was shut down for several hours as officers processed the scene for evidence.
Charges are not pending at this time.
