The Daytona Beach Police Department’s (DBPD) Traffic Homicide Unit is actively investigating a fatal accident this afternoon (September 4, 2020) near Mainland High School involving a 24-year-old Ormond Beach motorcyclist.
Officers were called to the intersection of South Clyde Morris Boulevard & Buccaneer Way just after 1:00 p.m., finding that man on the west side of Clyde Morris. He was not breathing and had a large chest wound.
Paramedics with the Daytona Beach Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene at 1:11 p.m.
Witnesses told detectives that man was speeding north on Clyde Morris approaching Buccaneer on a yellow Yamaha R1000 when he tried to pass a vehicle using the emergency break down lane in the middle of the road.
The motorcyclist lost control at that point, veering into oncoming traffic and hitting the front passenger side of a white 2006 Ford van as it went southbound on Clyde Morris in the left lane, ripping off its front passenger tire in the process.
The motorcyclist was ejected from the Yamaha at that point and eventually came to rest in a grassy area behind the guard rail on the west side of Clyde Morris.
The driver of the Ford van – a 51-year-old Daytona Beach man – was treated on scene by paramedics for a minor arm injury.
No other people were involved in this incident.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene and will be processed for evidence as part of the traffic homicide investigation.
Charges are not pending at this time. An autopsy is pending to determine if drugs were a factor.
