The Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) is actively investigating a traffic accident involving a stolen vehicle which ended with the death of a teenager.
Officers responded to the intersection of Derbyshire Road & 6th Street soon after emergency dispatchers received calls from witnesses to the accident around 2:15 this afternoon (May 9, 2020).
Member of DBPD’s Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit arrived on scene shortly afterward to gather evidence and determine what happened.
Detectives believe a 13-year-old black male was behind the controls of a yellow and white 2020 Suzuki RMZ 450 as it headed southbound towards the intersection of 6th and Derbyshire. It appears the dirt bike was going at a high rate of speed as it traveled on the grassy shoulder east of Derbyshire between the road and the sidewalk.
Meanwhile, a 56-year-old black female who was behind the wheel of a black 2015 Toyota RAV4 which was heading southbound on Derbyshire made a left turn at the intersection to head east on 6th Street. She completed that turn while she had the green light.
After completing her turn, the RAV4 driver told DBPD she spotted the Suzuki out of the corner of her eye as it attempted to cross 6th Street and that’s when it hit head-on with the front driver’s side of the RAV4, ejecting the teenager completely off the dirt bike.
Paramedics took the teenager from the scene to Halifax Health Medical Center. He passed away from his injuries shortly after arrival.
The RAV4 driver was not injured and stayed on scene until DBPD arrived. She was allowed to leave the scene in her vehicle after speaking with investigators.
Investigators have since determined that the Suzuki was reported stolen from Daytona Power Sports on March 27, 2020 and that the teenager was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
The dirt bike was towed from the scene and will be processed for evidence by DBPD.
No other people or vehicles were involved in this incident.
A determination on charges will be made once the accident investigation is complete. DBPD detectives are also actively trying to determine how the dirt bike was stolen and who was involved in the theft.
