The Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) is actively investigating a collision involving two vehicles that led to the death of a motorcyclist.
Officers responded to the intersection of North Atlantic Avenue/State Road A1A & Plaza Boulevard soon after the call for help came in at 7:39 p.m. yesterday (March 3, 2020).
DBPD’s Traffic Homicide Unit discovered that the vehicles involved were a white 2017 four-door Honda Civic and a black 2010 Harley-Davidson FLTRX.
Investigators believe the driver of the Civic – a 19-year-old Daytona Beach man – was driving in the northbound lanes of A1A when he stopped at the intersection in order to turn left (west) onto Plaza.
As the Civic made the turn, it struck the left side of the Harley-Davidson as the motorcycle driver – a 34-year-old Ormond Beach man – was crossing the intersection while heading south on A1A.
The impact knocked the motorcyclist off his vehicle and onto the ground, leading to injuries that required paramedics to transport him from the scene as a Trauma Alert.
The motorcycle driver passed away soon after arrival at Halifax Health Medical Center.
The driver of the Civic stayed on scene and called for emergency assistance as a witness performed CPR on the victim.
The Civic driver was cooperative with investigators and left the scene after talking with DBPD.
No other people were inside the Civic or on the Harley-Davidson at the time of the crash.
The motorcycle driver was not wearing a helmet.
Detectives are still trying to determine several aspects of this incident, including who had right of way at the time.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene and will be processed for evidence as part of the investigation.
Charges have not been filed at this time.
