A 42-year-old DeLand man passed away due to injuries stemming from a traffic accident over the weekend involving a pick-up truck and a motorcycle.
This case is being actively investigated by the Daytona Beach Police Department’s (DBPD) Traffic Homicide Unit (THI).
First responders arrived at the crash scene just after Midnight Sunday (January 26, 2020). Sandusky Agustus McCartney was declared dead at the scene soon after their arrival.
THI detectives believe McCartney was riding a black 2010 Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound on the Main Street Bridge when he approached its crest.
That’s when the motorcycle struck the driver’s side rear bumper of a blue 2011 Chevy Silverado driven by Tyler Shaquille Grady.
The Silverado was also heading westbound on the Main Street Bridge at the time. The driver had stopped at its crest because of stopped vehicles in front of him.
Investigators believe that the driver of the Harley-Davidson did not notice that the Silverado directly in front of him was stopped and that’s what led to the crash.
The impact saw McCartney ejected from the motorcycle, landing in the east-bound traffic lane. He was not wearing a helmet at the time.
Grady and a female passenger on board the Silverado did not report any injuries on scene. Both were released at the scene after investigators spoke to them.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene and will be held as part of the investigation. The bridge was also shut down to traffic for several hours as investigators processed the scene for evidence.
There are no criminal charges pending at this time.
