With assistance from the United States Marshals, two people are now in custody for the murder of an 18-year-old man around a month ago in Daytona Beach.

17-year-old Shyheem W. Rainge and 16-year-old Selvina M. Bernard are each facing felony first-degree murder charges in the death of Eric L. Gordon on November 24, 2019.

The Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) responded to the area around Campbell Middle School at 9.39 p.m. that Saturday night (November 23, 2019) after receiving complaints of gunshots.

Officers discovered that a gray 2012 Mitsubishi Galant had driven through the rear fence of Campbell Middle School and struck the school building, coming to a final rest at that spot. Damage to the building was estimated at $5,000.

First responders checked the inside of the vehicle and found Gordon slumped over the driver’s seat, bleeding profusely from a gunshot wound on the left side of his head. He was not responsive.

Paramedics rushed Gordon to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment, where he passed away around 1 o’clock the following morning (November 24).

Detectives arrived on scene soon afterward to begin the investigation, noting that there were multiple bullet holes found on the outside of the Galant’s driver side door. Witnesses also reported hearing gunshots in the area around the time the Galant crashed into the school.

Soon afterward, DBPD Chief Craig Capri offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case.

Through investigative techniques and in conjunction with the State Attorney’s Office, it was determined that Rainge and Bernard were responsible for Gordon’s murder.

Bernard’s arrest warrant was served this morning (December 20) at the Volusia County Department of Juvenile Justice, where she was in custody for an unrelated matter.

Rainge was picked up this morning (December 20) by the U.S Marshals in Fayetteville, Georgia. He will remain in custody there pending extradition.

Because this is still an active and ongoing investigation, no other information in this case will be released at this time.
