A 57-year-old Daytona Beach man is dead and a 26-year-old Lake Helen woman heads to the hospital following a head-on collision between a moped and a Mercedes sedan in Daytona Beach.
The Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) responded to the intersection of Mason Avenue and North Nova Road soon after the call for help came in around 6:41 p.m. Thursday (October 24).
Traffic Homicide Investigators believe the driver of the gray 2018 Zhng moped –Michael D. Pfeifer – was heading east on Mason as he went through the intersection, going through a red light in the process.
The moped then collided with the front of a black 2019 Mercedes Benz AMG E53 driven by Amanda N. Bodiford as she attempted to turn south onto Nova from the westbound lanes of Mason. The green turn arrow was active for her at the time.
The impact knocked Pfeifer off the moped, causing him to land on the road and come to a stop on the southwest corner of the intersection. A Daytona Beach Fire Department paramedic pronounced him dead at the scene.
Paramedics took Bodiford from the scene to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
Tow trucks took both vehicles from the scene and traffic in the area was affected for some time as investigators gathered evidence. The road has since re-opened.
Pfeifer’s next of kin has been notified.
No other people were involved in this incident.
DBPD does not anticipate filing criminal charges at this point.
