The Daytona Beach Police Department is partnering with Amscot Financial Services to give free children's bicycle helmets on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Amscot's Daytona Beach location at 979 W. International Speedway Blvd.
Helmet sizes are small, medium and large and are for children in pre-school and elementary school. They will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
According to law enforcement statistics, more than 100 bicycle-related deaths occur every year in the state of Florida. National records indicate that more than 94 percent of all bicyclists killed did not wear helmets.
The effectiveness of a bike helmet is highly dependent on how well it fits and how it is worn. For this reason, the police department will be on hand to ensure that recipients get a properly sized helmet along with instructions on how to wear it.
