The Daytona Beach Police Department is investigating a fatal accident involving two vehicles last night (September 20) on U.S. 1/South Ridgewood Avenue.
Our Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit was called to the scene on the 900 block of South Ridgewood at 6:46 p.m., around 20 minutes after the first call for help.
One of the vehicles involved – a four-door 1998 Nissan Altima – was at the corner of South Ridgewood Avenue and Shady Place facing westbound.
Detectives believe the driver of the Nissan – a 57-year-old Hispanic male – was trying to turn south onto Ridgewood when the front of the Nissan collided with the left side of a blue two-door Mercedes-Benz C320 heading north on Ridgewood.
Responding paramedics declared the driver of the Nissan dead soon after arrival. No injuries were initially reported to the other driver involved.
There were no passengers in either vehicle at the time of the accident.
Investigators believe the Nissan driver failed to yield the right of way to the Mercedes driver. There are no criminal charges pending at this time.
The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time pending next of kin notification.
The northbound lanes of Ridgewood were closed to traffic temporarily while investigators processed the scene and tow trucks took both vehicles away.
