Every year there are nearly 6,600 garage fire in homes that result in an average of 30 death, 400 injuries, and $457 million dollars in property loss. The leading cause of garage fires can be attributed to an electrical malfunction. These malfunctions can be caused by shorted out electrical wires, damaged wires, or the overloading of electrical outlets.
Here are some reminders for residents to follow to prevent garage fires;
1. Store oil, gasoline, paints, propane, and varnishes in a shed away from your home.
2. Keep items that can burn on shelves away from appliances.
3. Plug only one charging appliance into an outlet.
4. Don't use extension cords when charging an appliance.
