An Alabama man loses his life and a Daytona Beach woman suffers minor injuries after a motorcycle crashed into the back of a car in front of Daytona International Speedway early this morning.
The Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) responded to the intersection of ISB and Bill France Boulevard soon after the call for help came in just before 5 a.m. Saturday (June 19, 2021). Members of DBPD’s Traffic Homicide Unit arrived shortly afterward to process for evidence and speak to witnesses.
The motorcyclist – a 31-year-old man – was riding a black Harley Davidson motorcycle west on ISB when he rode through a red light at the Bill France intersection, striking the rear driver’s side of a red Chevy Camaro head-on.
Investigators believe the Camaro had the green light as its driver – a 66-year-old Daytona Beach man – entered the intersection to turn east on ISB from the southbound lanes of Bill France.
The impact knocked the motorcyclist off of the Harley-Davidson and onto the road. It also spun the Camaro approximately 180 degrees.
Paramedics declared the motorcyclist – who was not wearing a helmet – dead at the scene shortly after arrival.
The driver of the Camaro reported no injuries, but paramedics did transport a passenger in the Camaro – a 63-year-old Daytona Beach woman – to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
No other people were involved. Charges are not pending at this time.
An autopsy is pending to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor.
