The Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) is actively investigating a fatal traffic incident where two Georgia women were struck by a vehicle as they attempted to cross South Atlantic Avenue/State Road A1A on foot.
Officers responded to the accident scene on the 1500 block of South Atlantic Avenue (between Wisteria & Poinsettia roads) soon after Volusia County emergency dispatchers received a call for help at 1:19 a.m. on Saturday (March 27, 2021) from someone who witnessed the incident.
Members of DBPD’s Traffic Homicide Unit arrived on scene shortly afterward to process for evidence and speak to witnesses.
Investigators believe a black 2017 Nissan Altima was heading north on A1A using the right-hand lane when its front struck both women as they attempted to cross A1A on foot heading eastbound, knocking them to the ground.
One of the women who was struck – a 48-year-old resident of Fairburn, GA – died on scene. The other – a 44-year-old resident of Austell, GA – was transported from the scene by paramedics to Halifax Health Medical Center in critical condition.
The male driver of the Altima – a 21-year-old Holly Hill resident – reported no injuries from the accident. Neither did any of the three adult passengers (one female, two males) on board the Altima at the time of the accident. All of the Altima passengers were Daytona Beach residents.
The Altima driver remained on scene and was cooperative with investigators. The vehicle was later towed from the scene by DBPD for evidence processing.
The investigation is ongoing. Charges will be determined once it is complete.
