[ARCHIVED] Motorcyclist Involved In School Bus Crash Passes Away

Madison and Nova school bus vs. motorcycle 21-04192 488 x 450

A 29-year-old Daytona Beach man has lost his life after he was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and a Volusia County Schools (VCS) bus.

Seth A. Whitmer died at Halifax Health Medical Center (HHMC) yesterday afternoon (March 17, 2021), eight days after paramedics transported him to HHMC as a trauma alert in critical condition from the accident scene at the intersection of North Nova Road (State Road 5A) and Madison Avenue.

Witnesses at the scene called Volusia County emergency dispatch for assistance at 3:46 p.m. on March 9, saying that a motorcyclist had crashed into the school bus inside the intersection and was thrown from the motorcycle following the impact.

Officers with the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) responded quickly to the scene, finding Whitmer on the ground with severe injuries.

Investigators believe Whitmer was heading southbound on Nova behind the controls of a black 1999 Honda VT 1100 motorcycle when he ran the red light at the Madison intersection, striking the tire and tire rim on the front driver’s side of the bus as it attempted to turn north on Nova from the eastbound side of Madison.

No injuries were reported by the VCS bus driver or the 14 passengers on board the bus, all of whom had boarded at Mainland High School.

Whitmer was the only person on board the motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

There are no charges pending for this accident.

This is the ninth fatal accident reported in Daytona Beach for 2021 and the sixth in Daytona Beach during Bike Week 2021. Of the Bike Week fatalities, three of them involved motorcycles and three did not.

A 53-year-old Daytona Beach lost her life after she was injured during a “lay down” single-motorcycle crash on South Nova Road last Saturday (March 13).

A 39-year-old New Hampshire woman died after she was knocked off the back of a motorcycle following an early-morning collision last Sunday (March 14) on International Speedway Boulevard.

A 68-year-old Ormond Beach man passed away at HHMC on Saturday (March 13), two days after officers pulled him from a submerged vehicle.

A 68-year-old Titusville man was killed following a two-vehicle crash Thursday night (March 11) on North Williamson Boulevard near Reliability Way.

A 52-year-old Ormond Beach woman died on March 6 (Saturday) after her vehicle collided with a Daytona Beach Fire Department truck near HHMC.
