[ARCHIVED] Local Black pioneers honored with banners on city’s main thoroughfare

An effort to recognize historic Black leaders has expanded this month through a partnership between the Midtown Community Development Corporation and the city. Street banners will be displayed on International Speedway Boulevard from Nova Road to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and feature local Black icons including:

Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune
Mary Evelyn Bonner
Rose Marie Bryon
Minnie Wiggins Campbell
Charles W. Cherry Sr.
Samuel James “Rip” Collins Jr.
Dr. Evelyn Stocking Crosslin
James E. Huger Sr.
Keturah Thompson Jackson
Merrell Charles Lloyd
Dr. Richard V. Moore Sr.
Jack (Jackie) Roosevelt Robinson
Yvonne Scarlett-Golden
LeRosa Smith
Herbert Thompson
Howard Thurman 

Additional banner sponsors include the Daytona Branch of the NAACP, Daytona Times, Daytona Tortugas, Delta Signa Theta Sorority, Geico, Herbert Thompson Funeral Home, Identity Church, Medallion Healthcare Services and Ritchey Autos.

Street banners recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were unveiled in January on the same stretch of road.
