The Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) is investigating after a 35-year-old Port Orange woman was struck and killed by a vehicle while attempting to cross U.S. 1 on foot.
Officers were sent to the scene near the intersection of U.S.1/Ridgewood Avenue & Osceola Avenue soon after emergency dispatchers received the call for help at 11:52 p.m. last night (December 29, 2020).
DBPD’s Traffic Homicide Unit arrived shortly afterward to talk to witnesses and process the scene for evidence.
Investigators think a black 2010 Dodge Charger driven by a 40-year-old Daytona Beach man was approaching Osceola while heading north on U.S. 1 in the left lane when its front driver side struck the woman and knocked her to the ground.
It appears that the woman was attempting to cross from the east side of the road to the west when she was hit by the Charger. It also appears that she was not using a marked crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing at the time of the crash.
The driver stayed on scene to talk to officers and he told them that he did not see the woman until just before the Charger struck her. He also told investigators that he tried to avoid hitting her but was unable to.
Paramedics took the victim from the scene to Halifax Health Medical Center (HHMC) as a trauma alert with life-threatening injuries. She passed away from her injuries soon after arrival at HHMC.
Charges are not pending at this time.
