A 25-year-old man is now undergoing treatment after he was shot tonight (December 17, 2020) by officers with the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) while they were investigating a domestic disturbance complaint.
Officers were dispatched to the Icon One Apartments inside One Daytona soon after the call came into the Volusia County emergency dispatch center at 9:51 this evening.
As officers were on the way to the scene, one of the people who called 911 for assistance told dispatchers that two men were arguing with one another in a parking lot off of Legends Lane and that one of the men indicated that he was going to “stab someone” if he saw a law enforcement officer arrive on scene.
Soon after officers arrived on scene, one of them spotted a sharp object inside a hand of one of the men involved in that argument. He’s since been identified as Andrew A. Mansilla.
Body camera video of the incident shows that Mansilla charged at one of the officers with that sharp object in his hand despite repeated warnings to stop moving towards the officer.
It was at that point when a Taser was deployed in an attempt to stop Mansilla. When that proved unsuccessful, two officers pulled out their service firearms and shot Mansilla.
Paramedics transported Mansilla soon afterward to Halifax Health Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. No other injuries were reported.
The identity of the officers who were involved in the shooting will remain confidential for now as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates this incident.
Those officers will be placed on administrative leave with pay until the investigation concludes, which is standard procedure in these types of incidents.
