Charges are pending as the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) continues to investigate a fatal accident involving a pedestrian.
Officers responded to the intersection of West International Speedway Boulevard (ISB) & North Beach Street soon after the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Friday (February 28, 2020).
DBPD’s Traffic Homicide Unit believes that the victim in this case – a 73-year-old woman – was walking with a friend when both attempted to cross ISB on foot heading south from the northwest corner of the intersection.
As both approached the sidewalk on the southwest corner, they were struck by the front of a 2018 silver Chrysler Pacifica whose driver – an 80-year-old man – was looking to make a right turn from the eastbound lanes of ISB to the southbound lanes of Beach.
Investigators believe the victim and her friend - a 72-year-old woman – were using the crosswalk at the time of impact and had the right-of-way.
The Pacifica was stopped at the intersection when the driver pulled forward to make his turn, striking both women in the process.
Paramedics took the 73-year-old woman from the scene to Halifax Health Medical Center as a trauma alert. She passed away shortly after arrival.
The 72-year-old woman received a cut to her lower right leg and was not transported from the scene by paramedics.
The Pacifica was towed from the scene by investigators and will be processed for evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
